Of Zodwa and the disgraceful march

I have always wondered how Zanu Pf still has so much support in Zimbabwe despite poor economic policies and governance. The past week I got to understand why and how Zanu PF is still a party for the masses. Thousands thronged the streets of Harare and Masvingo in support of Grace Mugabe. Numerous printed banners displayed the name of the girl (Gabriella Engels) that Grace allegedly bashed in a Sandton Hotel. The most baffling thing of these demonstrators was the sheer ignorance of what they were protesting for and why they had to show support for the disgraceful first lady.

According to Bus Stop TV interviews of the protesters most of them seemed unaware what Afriforum is and where the organisation is based. Other protesters even stated that they had not yet been informed of the reasons behind the march. The so called Grace Mugabe solidarity marches exposed just the sheer ignorance among those holding placards as to what really they were marching in support of and whether or not they supported the cause. Seeing these videos made me realise that despite Zim having a very high literacy rate, Zanu PF capitalizes on the less educated of the masses to raise awareness on their programs and garner votes. The ignorance shown by those that took part in the solidarity marches clearly shows how Zanu PF has managed to use the masses to its advantage. It is a party that leads the blind for its own benefit. It is such a pity to see fellow countryman being manipulated by the rich and elitists within the ruling party.

Even Manicaland Provincial Affairs Minister Mandi Chimene was not aware of what Afriforum does as an organisation, nor where the organisation was based. For someone holding such a position to show such levels of being daft and ignorant resembles the state of affairs in Zimbabwe. Praise singers such as Chimene have found themselves holding such offices because of their bootlicking tendencies in Zanu PF. Appointments are not based on merit, because if they were based on such premise surely Chimene would not be a Provincial Affairs Minister.

On a lighter side, the hullabaloo about Zodwa WaBantu performing at a carnival in Harare is just as equally distasteful as the disgrace solidarity marches. Zimbabweans should desist from petty issues such as whether Zodwa should perform or not and focus on how we can fix our country. The letter to Anne Nhira by Patrick Zhuwao shows how those in government care little about the plights of everyday Zimbabweans that even the most minimal of entertainment is relegated to the elitist in the ruling party. A whole government, just even thinking about whether Zodwa should perform or not, even resulting in a cabinet minister writing a letter, surely Zim has gone to the dogs. I just hope we can vote these old fores out come 2018. Signing out Generation X18
